Reading Challenge

by Mrs Collier

Wow!  I am really impressed with your responses to the Reading Challenges. We've got some deep thinkers at Old Moat.

This week, I am sharing a poem I shared during our Facebook bedtime stories because now, even more than ever, it has a really important message.  It's by a poet called Benjamin Zephaniah.  Read the poem, have a look at the performance of it on the link, talk about it with your family and friends then answer the questions.

RECIPE FOR THE BRITISH

https://youtu.be/dZ1yYOAwvvo

1.  What is the most important part of the recipe?

2.  What is the message of the poem?

3.  Is there anything you would add to the recipe?

4. What do you think is the most important part of being British?

The other part of this week's challenge is to blog about a favourite poem.  One of my favourite poems is, "O, Tell me the Truth About Love" by W.H. Auden.  My stepdaughter read it at my wedding, so I have particularly fond memories of it.  It's about a child wondering what love is, and it's very funny.  It also has great rhythm and rhyme.

This week's French learning activities

by Madame Norris

Bonjour!

This week, we are going to consolidate your new topic: chores. We are mostly concentrating on practising our writing and spelling skills. We are also revising how to express opinions and conjunctions and using them together with the chores. Here is a reminder of the 8 expressions you need to complete the 4 activities I have set up for you on purple mash.

  1.  Faire la lessive = to do the laundry
  2.  Faire le ménage = to clean
  3.  Faire les lits = to make the beds
  4. Faire la vaisselle = to do the dishes
  5. Faire la cuisine = to cook
  6.  Mettre la table = to set the table
  7.  Passer l'aspirateur = to do the hoovering
  8. Sortir les poubelles = to put out the bins
  9.

I really look forward to see your work. I will award 5 dojos to all of you who complete all 3 activities on purple mash.

Amusez-vous bien! Have fun!

Madame Norris

Reading Challenge

by Mrs Collier

This is a lovely poem by a mixed-race poet and author called Jamila Gavin.  Can you answer the questions below?

MIRROR FRIENDS

When we look in the mirror,

Me and my friend,

I am brown and she is white.

When we look in the mirror,

Me and my friend,

My hair is dark and hers is light.

And my eyes are black as a raven's wing,

And hers are as blue as a sapphire ring.

She likes chips

And I like rice,

She likes ketchup

And I like spice.

But when we look in the mirror,

Me and friend

We feel we are the same as same can be,

Though I am brown and she is white,

We could be sisters,

She and me.

                                                                      Jamila Gavin

1.  What are the differences between the two girls in the poem?

2. What is the same about them?

3.  Can you write a few of the rhyming words from the poem?

4.  Why do you think Jamila Gavin wrote this poem?

Your other challenge is to remember a favourite book from when you were younger and recommend it to someone younger than you.  I really remember reading The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss when I was 7.  I loved the rhymes and the weird world of the poems, where everything was strange and exciting.  What do you remember from when you were younger?
